Traders' Expectations in Asset Markets: Experimental Evidence

نویسنده

چکیده

We elicit traders' predictions of future price trajectories in repeated experimental markets for a 15-period-lived asset. We find that individuals' beliefs aboutprices are adaptive, and primarily based on past trends in the current and previous markets in which they have participated. Most traders do not anticipate market downturns the first time they participate in a market, and, when experienced, they typically overestimate the time remaining before market peaks and downturns occur. When prices deviate from fundamental values, belief data are informative to an observer in predicting the direction offuture price movements and the timing of market peaks. (JEL C91, D12, D84, Gil)

Overreactions, Momentum, Liquidity, and Price Bubbles in Laboratory and Field Asset Markets

Laboratory asset markets provide an experimental setting in which to observe investor behavior. Over more than a decade, numerous studies have found that participants in laboratory experiments frequently drive asset prices far above fundamental value, after which the prices crash. This bubble-and-crash behavior is robust to variations in a number of variables, including liquidity (the amount of...

The Effect of Sequential Information Arrival on Asset Prices: An Experimental Study

A complete understanding of security markets requires a simultaneous explanation of price behavior, trading volume, portfolio composition (ie., asset allocation), and bid-ask spreads. In this paper, these variables are observed in a controlled setting-a computerized double auction market, similar to NASDAQ. Our laboratory allows experimental control of information arrival-whether simultaneously...

Thar “ SHE ” blows ? Gender , Competition , and Bubbles in Experimental Asset Markets

Do women and men behave differently in financial asset markets? Our results from an asset market experiment show a marked gender difference in producing speculative price bubbles. Mixed markets show intermediate values, and a meta-analysis of 35 markets from different studies confirms the inverse relationship between the magnitude of price bubbles and the frequency of female traders in the mark...

Individual irrationality and lack of common knowledge of rationality in experimental asset markets VERY PRELIMINARY

We investigate the extent to which the “bubbles” and “crashes” in the experimental asset markets are due to individual irrationality and lack of common knowledge of rationality. We do so by comparing between the forecasted prices initially submitted by subjects in two market environments: (a) All the six traders are human subjects (6H) and (b) One human subject is interacting with five rational...

Herding and Speculation in Experimental Asset Markets

I conduct an experiment to observe individual traders’ beliefs and desired behavior in a partial-equilibrium asset market. Isolated traders trade a risky asset in a market with exogenous prices. The price series exhibits a "bubble," diverging strongly from the expected dividend yield. Before trading, traders predict the asset’s price in the upcoming period, the price in the …nal period, and the...
